Tamed-Dashed - ENHYPEN

Tamed-Dashed - ENHYPEN (Choi Yong Seok, 2021)

ENHYPEN released the album, called Dimension : Dilemma, and the topic song is Tamed-Dashed.

Concept : Tamed-Dashed’s concept is new to ENHYPEN, which usually uses dark concepts. However, in this MV, ENHYPEN does light and fresh concepts, mainly about the youth of student life. Performance : In the MV, there is choreography when they dance in the chorus. The special point in the choreography is the chorus, the move that catches the air, and the temptation to run, fan by hand to show it’s summer. Narrative : "Tamed-Dashed" explores the members' personal lives. The song portrays the vivid predicament of the seven guys who are unable to choose between competing desires and paradoxical conflicts. The music video shows two parallel universes where only a football can travel from one to another. Gratification Social interaction : This MV was a huge hit for ENHYPEN when they tried on the new concept, which is fresh. The appearance for this comeback also received good feedback from the ENGENE (ENHYPEN fandom ) and netizens. Entertainment : This MV is entertaining the listener, KPOP lover, and definitely ENGENE. The way the concept of the student and how ENHYPEN enjoys the MV is also entertaining.

Technical aspects

At the beginning of the music video (MV), Niki, the youngest member of ENHYPEN and main dancer, is sitting down under the tree, making sure he is sitting in an area of shadow cover. He is trying to reach out to the American football outside the shadow, which is the area where sunlight lights on. This is a wide shot with the sound of a natural forest (environment sound). Additionally, special effects of old film grain are catching the attention, bringing old vintage vibes.

The scene changes to the locker setting, which is located in the school. The camera is set inside the locker. When Jungwon, leader of ENHYPEN, opened the locker. Right when Jungwon’s face appeared, the music started. The first shot is important since they need to engage the audience and bring them into the MV world. Jungwon zoomed in to draw viewers into the story. The shot is wide since we can see the scenery and the football. This sensed the loneliness, serene, and quiet yet this is just starting out. After Jungwon takes the ball out of the locker, the camera moves with him and he starts to lip-sync with lyrics. The locker thing is a good transition. The way the editor zooms in and out of Jungwon and Jay's faces and whole bodies draws viewers' attention.

When Sunghoon appears and lip-syncs with lyrics and passes the ball to each other with Jungwon and Jay, the camera follows the ball and switches to the remaining 4 other members - Heeseung, Jake, Sunoo, and Niki - a scene that is a good transition.

The camera follows the back of Jake and moves where Jake’s eyes trace editing. The shot is not close-up, it’s more wide and deep focus, with editors not blurring anything out in the background. This scene gives no sense of intimacy yet they give out a sense of togetherness and fun.

When the dance chorus scene, they use mainly zoom-in wide shots and zoom-out to extreme wide shots. The main reason is to keep all the members in one scene, not focus on only one or two members.

Then move to the scene outside the school, when Jay throws the football in the air and there is a special effect that the ball stops in the air by some magical thing involving Heeseung’s power.

Right the moment the ball falls down from the air, the transition of the ball switches to another setting, the beach, where using natural light - environment. This set is where every member enjoys playing American football on the beach. The camera moves a lot and focuses on every member, which is very cinematic.

The Sunoo focus scene is in the darkroom yet some sunlight goes through the room, which becomes hard-lighting.

There is a scene where Heeseung is the main focus member when the camera turns 360 degrees. Then panning from a low-angled view to each ENHYPEN member, which is close-up shots. Other playing scenes on the beach are low-angled views.

The second dance chorus has some cross-cutting still posing of Jay and Sunghoon with the dancing works of the team is well down and dramatic, giving some sense of strongness, showing we have lots of power, which related to the story of the whole Manhwa story that ENHYPEN is main characters.

The extreme wide shot of Sunoo on the large green field. From the extreme wide shot move zoomed in to the wide shot gives a sense of power, and looks intimate yet a sense of curiosity and adventure. It is a beautiful shot of scenery intriguing the audience about what is happening.

The camera follows the members playing water on the beach, the camera follows even when the water flashes lens. In every scene, the flashing water is close up.

At the end of the music video, Niki goes back to the starting place, which is in the shadow area of the forest. It likes to come back full circle, kind of insinuating, everything that happened was dream or daydreaming. This is an intertextual like a dream of every ENHYPEN member.

The whole music video gives out a magical feeling, which is true because it is related to the story that ENHYPEN does with the main characters in the manhwa called Dark Moon, in which ENHYPEN members are vampires and every member has superpowers. The production team does a great job of choosing a film camera to take video, showing sun flares. It is an aesthetic choice.
